What Are We?

What Are We?
13 June 2014 John Moore

We start small and then we grow. We rely on you totally for the first few months and for many years. We require lots of upfront investment and a long-term commitment. We do not come with a user manual and as we grow, we create challenges and problems. What are we?

“I am a child”. And “I am a business”.

Just like parenthood, nothing can prepare you for running a business. You can read books about being a parent and you can read books about how to run a business. You can attend parenting courses and you can attend courses in setting up a business. However, nothing comes close to the real hands-on experience: the closest you can get this talking to other parents and business owners who have been there and done that.

That is where LEXSHA can help you. LEXSHA is a new project funded by European Commission to enable business owners and managers to come together and to learn, exchange and share their knowledge and experience of running and growing a business. The LEXSHA portal will be like talking to other parents and tapping into their insights and pearls of wisdom – something no course or book can really achieve.

The first phase of LEXSHA is now complete. The eight European partners researched what business owners want and need. Each partner looked at the needs of different groups of entrepreneurs and businesses. The UK research focused on the needs of small, growing businesses. The Exponential team held focus group discussions and interviews with local businesses, business support agencies and business growth coaches

The national reports and the aggregate report will be available on the LEXSHA and Exponential websites very soon. The research identified four core messages from entrepreneurs.

Message 1:

“We value the experience of other business owners who have been there and got the T-shirt.”

Message 2:

“We are busy people and we want to access short, practical, bite-size pieces of knowledge and experience.”

Message 3:

“We want it help when we need it and we want to be able to ask other business owners for their ideas to help me solve my problems.”

Message 4:

“Just like children, we experience growing pains and want help to stop them!”

I know from the work Exponential does with high growth businesses that time is precious; businesses need answers to questions when they need them; and they all experience ‘growing pains’. Next month Exponential, Business Development Manager, James Dillon and I are attending the next LEXSHA Partner meeting in Athens. Our aim is to make sure the LEXSHA portal which is being built right now provides relevant, timely and practical support to help eliminate as many ‘growing pains’ as possible!

If you are not sure what I mean by ‘growing pains’ look out for my next blog post “Business Growth Can Kill.
