Top Tips for a Career Change: 6 Killer Questions

You do not have to be stuck in a rut, dreading each day of work or feeling over worked and under-appreciated to consider a career move. It could be the right time for you to take stock and think about your next move, but don’t do anything until you check out my six killer questions before you make a decision that will change your life.

New Job or Go It Alone?

This is exactly where I was in 1998 when I had to decide to ‘go it alone’ or look for another career move. I guess after sixteen very successful years, I made the right choice by setting up Exponential Training. But at the time, it was a HUGE decision to leave the relative safety of employment to set up my own business. At the time, I was more than comfortable in my job. I was earning over £40K a year, had a fully expensed car and was working in a job and for a company I loved. But I knew something was missing and that it was time to make a step change.

It was over the Christmas of 1998 that I made the decision to set up Exponential Training. All over the Christmas break I worked on my business plan, researched my market and then spent three months preparing to ‘go live’. I remember that first morning sat in my new office (I converted the garage), wondering how to get things done without the support of a marketing team, an administration team and a sales force. Reality hit home that I was on my own. The only person that was going to make things happen was me. The hard work had just begun.

One year later, I had turned over £90K – more than twice my old salary. All with virtually no overheads and you would think I would be happy. But NO! I was too busy and had more work than I could handle. I had paperwork coming out of my ears and so many opportunities I did not know on which one to focus. Worst still, due to my success, I had not planned to manage my tax position very well. As a sole trader, I was due to pay 40 per cent of my sales revenue in personal tax.

This was my BIG lesson in 1999. From then on, I have made sure I have surrounded myself with the best team members, coaches and advisors I can afford and access. During my second year, I went from a successful solopreneur to an employer with offices and ‘all the stuff’ that comes with being a growing business.

By the end of the second year, I needed to move into bigger offices; I needed more team members and suddenly the business was not me, but a brand known as Exponential Training. Planning, prioritising and exploiting every lesson I had learned from my previous employer; my mentor and boss suddenly became really important.

Sixteen years on, Exponential Training has delivered in 50+ countries, worked with thousands of businesses, managers and consultants and survived and thrived despite three recessions, huge changes in the market and a technological revolution in the use of online learning.
