LEAPing into Action

Last month, partners from Austria, Ireland, Portugal, Cyprus, Greece and the United Kingdom met for the inaugural meeting of LEAP – a three-year project that will transform the way e-portfolios are used to deliver vocational education and training.

Hosted by BEST Institut für berufsbezogene Weiterbildung und Personaltraining, partners spent two days exploring, imagining and planning how they will deliver a world class e-portfolio system.

Exponential Training Project Coordinator, John Moore said:

“Apprenticeship providers in the UK have been using e-portfolios for over a decade. Most of the systems focus on the meeting the qualification and funding requirements rather than the needs of learners. LEAP is being designed from the learner’s perspective with an emphasis on improving performance where it counts – in the workplace.”

Rather than designing LEAP to support only formal learning leading to qualifications, LEAP will also lend itself to use with non-formal learning and performance. During the kick-off meeting in Austria, IT specialists, BEST Cybernetics, presented the draft specification for LEAP platform.

The platform will make it easy for learners to reflect on learning and performance. The platform will include the use of open digital badges helping to motive and incentivise learners. The integration of digital badges into LEAP also means learners will be able to share and display their achievements in their CVs, social media and applications when applying for jobs and promotion.

Today, technology presents big challenges and opportunities for learners, teachers, trainers and educators. The LEAP project will transform the way learner’s experience and participate in vocational education and training. The LEAP platform will exploit new digital learning technologies including making more use of social media tools, on-line assessment and open digital badges making it one of the most flexible, intuitive and easy e-portfolio platforms in Europe.

During 2018, partners will be launch a range of courses which will be supported by LEAP. In the UK, Exponential Training will be delivering the Chartered Management Institute’s suite of professional qualifications in Coaching and Mentoring, Consulting and Management and Leadership.

Anne-Marie Daly, Exponential’s Quality Assurance Manager said:

“I cannot wait to start using LEAP with my training and assessment team. I have already seen the draft specification and if only half of what is in the specification works, it will transform the way my team and I work with our learners. I love the focus on performance and the application of knowledge and skills rather than the learning.”

She added:

“This will be a ground-breaking project that will help students to complete VET courses and qualifications faster and more efficiently. At the heart of the LEAP platform is improved performance. We expect to see our students making a greater impact at work resulting in significant improvements in their performance and productivity.”
