Unless you have been asleep for 15 years, you cannot help but notice that technology has and continues to change the way people work and learn. The latest wave of technology sees the widespread use of ‘flipping’. What on earth is ‘flipping’?

What is ‘Flipping’?

One definition of flipping suggest that it is:

‘… a pedagogical approach in which direct instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, and the resulting group space is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning environment where the educator guides students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matter’.

In plain and simple language, flipping simply involves using video to present knowledge instead of teachers and trainers doing it face-to-face. The flipped training room or classroom is simply where the ‘knowledge input session’ or self-study elements are reversed with real time, face-to-face support. Short video knowledge input sessions are viewed by learners before the class or workshop session, leaving more time in the classroom or workshop to devote to exercises, projects, or discussions. During class or workshop sessions, teachers, and trainers function more as coaches, encouraging learners in individual inquiry and collaborative effort.

Exponential Training has been using this approach for years not realising this is what it is called. Through Flipping First, Exponential Training and other Erasmus+ partners from Poland, Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain will be sharing and developing a raft of ideas, tools and techniques enabling you to use ‘flipping’.

The first stage of Flipping First is a survey to define and prioritise the design of the Flipping First vocational educational training course. Once developed, whether you are a trainer, a coach or a teacher, you will be able to explore and use the Flipping First tools and resources.
