Triple Bottom-line Makes a Difference

An evaluation of the impact of implementing the Usewine Triple Bottom-line model (TBL) in the wine sector has shown the Erasmus+ funded project is making a difference on each of the three TBL pillars.

Benchmarking Wine Enterprises

Over the past two years, Exponential Training, along with seven partners throughout Europe, have been developing and implementing a new business tool with small and medium enterprises within the wine sector. In 2015, the partners conducted a major benchmarking exercise involving dozens of UK wine producers and hundreds of European producers. It focussed on the performance of wine enterprises in the three so-called ‘TBL pillars’ – planet, profit and people.

The aggregated data enabled partners to prepare a set of national and European TBL benchmarks including an analysis of ten specific business practices of wine enterprises. The partners also used individual wine SMEs reports to help over 100 enterprises to prepare and implement a Usewine TBL action plan. The evaluation survey aimed to measure the impact of the coaching provided by the trained Usewine Facilitators.

The UK results showed the Usewine project has contributed to a significant number of wine SMEs making changes in many of the business practices.

  • A third of respondents reported that they had made changes to the Business Practices ‘Strategy’ (31%) and ‘Marketing and Sales’ (31%).
  • Respondents reported that they had made changes to Social Responsibility (78%) and People and Skills (77%).
  • Nearly three quarters of respondents reported that they had made changes to Resource Management (72%).
  • Just under sixty per cent of respondents reported making changes to Finance.

The responses show that overall the Usewine project has impacted on multiple Business Practices of UK wine SMEs. The impacts were similar in the Cyprus, France, Austria, Portugal, Poland, Spain and Romania.

Going forward, the partners are exploring how the Triple Bottom-line model and assessment tool might be developed further including use with enterprises from other sectors. The full results of the impact evaluation will be presented during the Usewine conference taking place on Friday 29 June in Zaragoza, Spain.
