A Lesson in Team Building

We thought we were good at developing teams, but the Georgians win hands down.

In February, Exponential Director John Moore and I delivered an intensive four day residential course in Tbilisi, Georgia. Sponsored by the TAM/BAS team and funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development, twenty eight consultants and advisors assembled as part of the Certificate in Management Consulting Essentials.

Whilst the camaraderie during the course was excellent, nothing could prepare us for the cultural experience of a lifetime. National Programme Director Severian Gvinepadze from TAM/BAS, who was hosting the course, organised a spectacular evening of traditional Georgian food music and dance.

With participants from Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia, each with their own language and customs, it could have been a long evening. Instead the combination of the hospitality, the traditional toasting throughout the dinner, the music and the dance made for an unforgettable evening. Well before the end of the evening you could have been forgiven for assuming everyone had known each other for years.

Just in case you are wondering, the training was also very successful. With just two CMCE assignments still to be submitted it looks like everyone will have passed before the end of March – Exponential is expecting a 100 per cent success rate.

In keeping with the Georgian tradition of toasting people throughout the dinner, I would like to toast my hosts and colleagues from Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan – thank you for an insight into your wonderful culture and traditions - cheers!
