Exponential Assisting the Police

The Police Force is breaking with its long tradition of police officers joining as constables and working their way up through the ranks; it now offers a Direct Entry programme to proven leaders and managers giving them the opportunity to join the force directly at the rank of superintendent or inspector.

To be successful, processes need to be in place to ensure that appropriate support is provided to those with no prior policing experience to enable different skills and abilities to be applied in a policing context. Part of this process involves providing coaching and mentoring from qualified personnel with the College of Policing.

Lead Beyond - Direct Entry Programme

The Direct Entry programme, delivered by the College of Policing, supports the National Policing Vision in helping to bring existing exceptional leaders into the police service to make an immediate impact on culture, efficiency and effectiveness. Programme members will be trained over 18 months and given coaching and mentoring, to equip them with the skills required to inspire confidence in officers, staff and the public.

"The Police Force can be a culturally challenging environment so it is important that those without policing experience are developed in a structured and reassuring way. We want to be able to capture the new ideas and the fresh perspectives offered by those on the Direct Entry programme so that policing stays current and that skills are enhanced. I believe that coaching and mentoring can contribute to this." explained Chief Superintendent Nicola Dale, Direct Entry and Fast Track Programmes Lead.

Coaching & Mentoring

Exponential Training is pleased to be a part this initiative and is supporting eight personnel, including Nicola, from the College of Policing as they work towards completing the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 5 Certificate in Management Coaching and Mentoring qualification. Nicola wanted to develop her skills and those of her colleagues so that they would be better engaged in the development of new officers. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is a key aspect of policing and the coaching and mentoring qualification was identified as being the most relevant to support development all round.

"The impact of any of us achieving the qualification will provide the College of Policing with the ability to offer coaching and mentoring throughout policing and for me to deliver an effective Direct Entry programme” said Nicola. “It will also set an example, we need to move towards a culture of not only self-development, but one which develops others either at peer level or supervisory level" continued Nicola.

Coaching and mentoring can help to bring together the different skills and experiences people have through sharing and learning from others. Nicola’s team members are seconded from different forces throughout the country, bringing their own levels of skills and experiences however, the one thing they have in common is that they will be learning how to provided structured coaching and mentoring support.

"I like the flexibility of the distance learning programme offered by Exponential Training as I can plan my studying around my other commitments. Breaking the qualification down into units and being allowed to reflect on my own performance as a manager and trainer will not only help with my professional development but will also impact on my role and those I will be coaching and mentoring" said Nicola. "I found it a bit daunting to start studying again after a considerable time, however it’s reassuring to know that guidance from my assessor is there whenever I need it".
