How to Get Outstanding Results

I have worked with thousands of training managers, coaches, consultants and organisations who start with their solution without first answering the question: "What are we trying to achieve?" The result is often the same – 'hit-and-miss' results.

Getting results is easy. To get the right results is harder. To get outstanding results is really tough. That is why you need to have a robust needs analysis process that focuses on results and impact. Let me explain.

Whatever is delivered –  a one-day external training course, a 12 month qualification programme, or a three day in-house workshop – we are bound to get a result. The result might be what we wanted to achieve or it might not. What is certain is that there will be a result.

The result might be more knowledgeable individuals who enjoyed the training course and no more. The result might be that some of the participants now use some of the ideas explored in the workshop and have improved in some aspects of their performance. There might of course be no improvement, but that is still a result, albeit a costly one.

If a training course delivers on all of the planned results that is surely an achievement. There are lots of scenarios when this approach is adequate. To deliver outstanding results requires a little bit more investment of time and a higher level of thinking. Outstanding results are achieved when the planned results are surpassed. They are achieved when people take what they have learned and create even better ideas, processes and solutions. They occur when knowledge, skills and experience meets application, reflection and continuous improvement – what I call 'synergistic learning'.

Outstanding Results

To achieve outstanding results from training means 'starting with the beginning and the end in mind'! To achieve outstanding results requires an understanding of the context of the training or learning; the end game goals of the organisation or learner and a multi-faceted training or learning programme.

Step 1: Understand Organisation Goals & Objectives

Step 1 starts by understanding the context in which the desired goals and results are to be attained. Without this context, there is bound to be a misalignment between what is delivered versus what is required in order to deliver the required results.

Step 2: Benchmark Current & Future Performance

Step 2 involves simply benchmarking current versus future minimum levels of performance. This step is key as it provides clues about how to evaluate and measure success; how big the 'performance gap' is; and what training, development and/or learning interventions might be needed to deliver the results.
