Is VET Fit for the 21st Century Solopreneur?

I have had a HUGE response from the presentation I delivered at the LEXSHA European conference, in Bordeaux, last week. I spoke about the use and relevance of Digital Approaches to Vocational Education and Training (VET) in relation to solopreneurs.

History shows us that we as human beings have communicated and educated people in a way that technology supports and enhances. Egyptians used hieroglyphics, making use of images and symbols to communicate their ideas and messages. Later we moved to writing using quill pens and eventually the invention of the printing press enabled stories and ideas to be shared with many more people. By the end of the 20th and the 21st century, information technology has transformed the way we communicate information on a global scale. But, have things really changed that much from the perspective of education and learning?

I talked about the way knowledge provided an elite with a power and that technology has now enabled knowledge to be readily available to the population at large. Power no longer comes from the knowledge itself, but from the application of the knowledge. This has seen a seismic shift in the way vocational, education and training is delivered by suppliers and consumed by learners.

Today, the focus is on performance; ‘just-in-time learning; and pragmatic, solution-focussed learning. Knowledge for knowledge sake is dead! One group of what I called ‘disruptive social learners’ – solopreneurs - epitomise this shift and can give VET suppliers some clues about how they need to structure and make available learning opportunities.

The rise of the solopreneur is not a new phenomenon, but is one that is growing exponentially. In the United States, there are over 30 million solopreneurs. Although much smaller, the number of solopreneurs in Europe is growing fast. I am delighted to announce that this year Exponential Training is developing an Erasmus+ strategic partnership project with several Partners to explore strategies to help solopreneurs to set up, flourish and grow.

I made the announcement at the LEXSHA European conference and have had a very positive response. Over the next month, I will be working with potential partners to create what will be one of the first Erasmus+ project to explore this exciting and growing area of small business growth that is transforming the world of work for millions.
