Exponential Training’s Light Bulb Moment

You know when you get something, it is like a light bulb switching on – well that is exactly what happened when myself and Managing Director, John Moore, met up with Bulb Studios last week.

Light Bulb Moments

We have all had light bulb moments. You know those moments where you have a great idea and we get excited. However, most of us often fail to capture them or to exploit them only to find out someone else has a similar idea and ran with it. At that point, we exclaim, "I thought of that!"

Exponential Training's Managing Director, John Moore, first mentioned the use of gamification in passing four years ago. It followed a visit to our Partners, Eduquest International in Singapore where he attended a conference in which one of the speakers was talking about gamification. Gam-a-what? Then earlier this year, he began working on a new Erasmus+ European project application to improve the performance of project managers and project teams through the use of a gamification tool. The penny dropped and my idea was born!

My Idea

"An interactive, engaging learning portal that motivates, inspires and recognises achievements and results in the workplace." This simple idea is now taking shape with the appointment of a local digital design, web design & development agency, Bulb Studios.

John and I spent a stimulating and inspiring day with three team members from Bulb Studios, where we started to design and develop our specification. This was a learning experience that we enjoyed and will help us to develop and progress other ideas.

I will keep you posted as my idea progresses, but let me just say at this stage – IT WILL TRANSFORM THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE AND THE RESULTS ACHIEVED BY OUR STUDENTS AND THEIR ORGANISATIONS!

Ideas – Art or Science?

This prompted me to think 'where do ideas come from and how can you capture that moment and then develop them?' That got me thinking and eventually I found a great little book by Tom Evans. Tom’s book, The Art and Science of Light Bulb Moments explores a lot of really good information about idea. It is a simple, but interesting and easy to read .

In the first part of the book, there are lots of thoughts about how we operate in the world and how we relate to it; how the brain works; what the mind is; and how the emotions and gut interact with the mind.

In the second part, he explains how we can literally change our minds and be more effective and successful. By covering a wide range of topics and ideas, Tom helps you to obtain an insight and understanding of his ideas and techniques very quickly. Add to this his practical suggestions, guidelines and exercises, the book provides a great source of ideas and inspiration.

What do others think?

"A very nifty little book for Entrepreneurs wanting to learn how to harness the power of our ideas. It’s arty, scientific and magical and much, much more useful and inspiring than Dragon’s Den!"

Judith Morgan, Entrepreneur
