Module Summary

Managers are responsible for the performance of both the teams they manage and the individuals within those teams. Performance management has been defined as 'a process which contributes to the effective management of individuals and teams in order to achieve high levels of organisational performance. As such, it establishes shared understanding about what is to be achieved and an approach to leading and developing people which will ensure that it is achieved' (Armstrong and Baron 2004).

Performance management is more than conducting an annual appraisal review with individuals. Performance management is an organisational approach designed to link individual, team and organisational performance.

Managers need to be able to identify and agree clear performance based objectives with teams and individuals and support their teams and team members to achieve them. They need to be able to assess performance and then provide effective feedback.

Managers may also be required to address issues such as under performance and manage conflict situations; this may lead to the need for the use of their organisation's disciplinary and/or grievance procedures. This unit also explores the concept of employee engagement and considers the role of the manager in managing and improving performance.
